This adds your NAS shares under Downloads/Files on – it doesn't like to process Windows shares, at least here. So first install the Samba Client from Google Play. More to F-Droid and more to Install from non-play sources.
Update: Play doesn't seem to have the Samba client anymore, but it does F-Droid. Hence my tip: Total Commander and the plug-in described from step 7 onwards is probably the best way to go, since nothing changes all the time. In plain English: It's a pain in the ass.
It depends on the apps whether you see the network folder in the file selection dialog (be it when opening or saving). Mist Samba access under Android is still: After mounting the LAN share, you will find the folder in the file manager Total Commander, for example, but not in Android's own "Files" - the entry is displayed but not opened. Only the download link for the Samba client is new. Update 10 / 2020: The article is a bit old, but it still works. Both types of releases can then be made in the network via an address of the type \\my-computer\my-share or \\192.168.178.10\my-share access, for example via browser. Under Windows, you can easily share individual folders via the context menu. If you are running a NAS, you will probably already have some, which then appear as "Movies", "Photos" or something similar on your workstation. Requirement: Of course you need approvals first. You access NAS shares via Google Samba Client, or via Total Commander, which can also handle Windows shares. So why bother sharing files via the cloud? USB cable? Wrong decade. If you want to access files on the NAS from the computer, you can do this simply via shares - and such SMB shares is of course also available for Android.
